Lubbock Texas: Kamloops area rancher and broadcaster Hugh McLennan was among the notable
individuals gathered at the National Cowboy Symposium Sept. 5 for the annual Cowboy Culture
Awards show at the municipal Auditorium at Texas Tech University.
McLennan, along with his wife Billie, was presented with the Founders Award by
historian, author and co-chairman of the awards Dr. Walter Bishop of Litchfield Illinois.

Some of the individuals joining Hugh and Billie in the list of 2002 recipients were Actor
James Drury, star of the TV Series "The Virginian", Roy Rogers Jr, (Dusty) Rogers, and Dale
Warren who celebrated 50 continuous years with the Sons of the Pioneers.
A partial list of past recipients includes Ian Tyson of Longview Alberta, Richard
Farnsworth, Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Rex Allen, Gene Autry, Ben Johnson and John Wayne.
The sold out audience of over 3000 enjoyed the music of the legendary Sons of the Pioneers
between presentations and another Canadian featured prominently in the evening. Eli Barsi
received a standing ovation for her emotional rendition of God Bless America to close the
show.
The award is a beautiful pewter sculpture of a working cowboy with rope in hand and the
remuda in the background, on a solid oak base and backing. The depiction was created from
a painting by famous Western Artist Tom Ryan of Midland Texas. The recipient's names are
permanently etched into the base.
Hugh's weekly syndicated radio show "The Spirit of The West" is heard across a network of
stations in Western Canada and 5 U.S. states. This is another in a long list of honors
and awards the show has received.
