"First thing you notice is the voice. Just the sound evokes the Spirit of the West.
The second thing is that he's every bit the gentlemen he seems to be on the radio." -
Williams Lake Free Press
"On behalf of the 400 banquet guests who enjoyed your after dinner presentation I want to
express my sincere appreciation. Your word pictures and inspiring stories will stay with
us for years to come." - Dr. David Challack, Chairman National Holstien Convention
"It goes without saying that we can do the best job in hiring a speaker and outlining our
desired results but unless we have true professionals on the other end our efforts are
fruitless. Hugh, you did a GREAT job with the "Spirit of the West" Sunrise breakfast and
we owe you a big thank you. We received a pile of favorable comments about your great
presentation. Thanks for making us look so good." - Debbie Kaylor, Director of conventions
NCBA, Denver
"Your presentation and participation at our convention was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
Many people have contacted me since to ask about having you at their events. As they
said, your weekly radio show is the highlight of their week."
- Bob Kaufman, P.Ag, section president, International Society for Range Management.
"People attending our convention were pleasantly surprised at the caliber of speakers we
had and your presentation was the highlight of the whole event. Your evening presentation
was highly entertaining and inspiring. The next morning we heard you as a professional
broadcaster and you led our group into the workshop on media relations with ease. The
audience and guest panelists expressed their appreciation for your professional
participation."- Isabel McPerson, Executive Director, Foothills Forage Association.
This combination of working rancher, radio personality, cowboy poet and motivational
speaker never fails to deliver. Hugh's varied interest, lifestyle and wealth of
experience show in the excellent performance he delivers. A must see and hear for any
group.
- Bill & Darlene Freding, Oliver, B.C.
Hugh, just a note with a special thanks. The BC Cowboy Hall of Fame induction ceremony
would not be the same without you as the evening emcee. You always add a special touch
to the weekend of the Kamloops Cowboy Festival with your presentation. Your presence on
stage during the rest of the weekend, doing both poetry and pickin', is always enjoyed
by all. Thank you, and see you next year! - Mark McMillan, Festival Chairman, Kamloops
Cowboy Festival.
Here are some coments about the "Spirit of the West" Radio show:
Hugh, Good Morning. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy listening to
your weekly Spirit of the West broadcast via the web. I really enjoy
listening to all the hard working folks who still hold the traditions of
the West in high regard. Whether it be singing songs about the Cowboy's
Life, livestock care, raising and training a horse from birth who soon
becomes a best friend, Spirit of the West always takes me back home.
Even though I was born and raised in Montana, I have always loved Canada
and all the Canadians who still hold true to the Spirit of the West. My
wife and I travel to Montana, Canada and Arizona as much as possible and
see a lot of change (much of this change is for the worse) but, when you
leave the beaten path and visit the farms, ranches and talk to those who
love the land as it was years ago, I can see there is still hope for a
bright future for our children and grandchildren. All I ask is that you
and all your supporters stay true to the Spirit of the West and keep up
the great work! Sincerely, Dan

"We so often forget about our core audience in country radio today.
Include The Spirit of the West in your weekend schedule and they'll
love you. It's like reading a classic novel." Tom Tompkins, Standard Radio Inc.
Hugh I just wanted to say you have one of the best western radio shows that I ever listened
to. The guests are excellent and the topics are very interesting. One day I could get to
talk to you as I find the life of cowboys in different parts of western Canada interesting
to listen to. Many have great experience in cowboying and ranching. Continue the good
work on the Spirit of the West radio show. It is great. Best of regards, Bob Solomon.
Hi Hugh, I hear you on CFCW every Sunday morning and enjoy your show! Thanks for doing
such a great job!
Hi There! Just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed this weeks' broadcast! Makes me feel
right at home with old friends! Enjoyed the stories by Mr.Rose from Quilchena, and I
believe he spoke with me at my booth in Cranbrook. I think he'd be a cartoon series in
himself! You're doing a great job, and I hope people tell you that regularly! Friendy, WENDY

I would first, and foremost, like to thank you for the "Spirit of the West"!! I have
recently moved to Alberta, from the Kamloops (actually born in RIH) area, and was very
pleasantly surprised to find a local radio station that carries (twice on Sundays) your
fine program. I thought the only way I would be able to hear your exceptional program,
would be through the Internet. Thankfully CFAC out of Calgary, carries your program every
Sunday. Needless to say, every Sunday evening, the TV is off, and the radio is presented
loud and proud.
Hugh, just wanta tell excellent show tonite,I loved the music and I really like the vets
story of the dead frozen pig........keep up the good work. danny jones

coming on your excellent radio show. By the way you have lots of listeners in the Tappen
B.C area!!! Best regards Pete and Sandy Papenfus, Tappen, BC.
Hello Mr. McLennan! First of all I would like to congratulate you on an excellent
program! We listen every Sunday we can and when we have to miss a show we get you "live"
off the internet. Thank you for this wonderful look into the cowboy past and into the
cowboy future.

Hello, A few weeks ago you played a song by the Norman Luboff Choir that was just incredible
(I backed up the real player a few times to hear it again and again). Since then I have
been searching the internet now and then for a CD with this song on it. I have found
Norman Luboff CD's but none with western music on it. Can you tell me the name of the
album and/or how to get one. Thanks a bunch. Your show is a real treat every week! Keith

Hugh & Billie...I've recently discovered your show through cowboylife.com. I'm a Texan
born and raised and currently live in Big D. What a joy it is to listen to your show...
THANKS again for what you all are doing. Listening to The Spirit of the West sends cold
shivers down me! This Texan appreciates y'all!
Thank You! My husband Jack and I listen to your program every Sunday on CKSW Swift Current.
I am so gratefull for the guests you have on, as they are or have been friends of Jack's
over the years. This past Sunday you had Rex Allen on and he was glued to the radio.
Mr. Allen was a friend of Jack's and rode his horse when he was in Sask. at the Mexabition
held in Saskatoon in the early '60s. Jack was very involved in bringing cutting contests
to Sask. at the Agribition in Regina as well as Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. He rode and
raised registered Quarter Horse all his Ranching days. We now live in Swift Current and
Jack will be celebrating his 83rd Birthday in October, Thank You again, Regards, Bep Hamer,
